It's a gritty 'Film Noir' yarn about a gumshoe named Dick Vaganza who bites off more than he can chew in the form of two troublesome dames who want more from him than just his professional services!

A parody in the signature Sound & Fury style, with song, silliness and sex...ual innuendo!

REVIEWS:

As midnight strikes at the Underbelly, the Belly Button space is transformed - albeit mostly in our imagination - into the mean streets of 1940s or early 1950s Los Angeles for Sound & Fury's hysterical film noir parody. Laden with puns and innuendo, Private Dick pokes fun at the gumshoes of a bygone era as imagined by the three-strong cast of Richard Maritzer, Patrick Hercamp and Ryan Adam Wells, who play a myriad of roles including a pair of feisty dames.

It takes a lot of hard work to make something this chaotic look so effortless, and it's testament to the chemistry between the actors that they can ad lib their way out of a technical blunder or turn a careless slip of the tongue into a delicious dramatic tangent. This evening, Hercamp seems to be one giggle away from corpsing entirely as his co-stars forget to put a prop in their pocket and mispronounce a name. Only at the Edinburgh Fringe could something going dreadfully wrong be cause for uproarious celebration.

The private detective of the title is the unfortunately monickered Dick Vaganza (Maritzer), who solves those tricky cases that no one else wants with the help of his girl Friday, Doris (Hercamp), who is clearly smitten with her boss.

Sound & Fury's Private Dick wrings every possible double entendre and misunderstanding from the lead character's name, interspersed with clever wordplay, songs, cheesy gags which elicit groans from the audience, and plain silliness. The giddy enthusiasm of the cast is infectious, and we feel a genuine pang of disappointment when Vaganza's investigation draws to a fitting close.

“Hilarious doesn’t even begin to describe Sound & Fury’s Private Dick. From the moment they enter the stage, the laughs begin. Done in 1940s suspense-styled film noir (complete with voice-overs from the thoughts of private dick Dick Vaganza) the three men of Sound & Fury act and laugh their way through many male and female characters with absolute stylish silliness. From the lovesick Girl Friday Doris, Shylock the bookie, client Robert Bob and the sexy mysterious woman Faye Kname, Private Dick is fueled by hilariously cheesy metaphors and sexual innuendo. Gangsters, crooked church leaders, the prop whiskey that wasn’t a prop, obvious ad-libbing and singing and dancing, Sound & Fury’s Private Dick is the perfect concoction of suspense, thrills and absolute comic genius. Absolute must see! Final Word: Uproarious.
